Stop Using That! Products Your Optometrist Wishes You Would Avoid
Share
As Optometrists, we often see patients accidentally worsening their dry eye and irritation by using common products that are too harsh for the delicate eye area. Here are three products that should never be used for eyelid hygiene:
-
Baby Shampoo: While popularised years ago, many baby shampoos contain harsh detergents (surfactants) that can dissolve the crucial oil layer protecting your tears, making your dryness much worse.
-
Microwave-Heated Washcloths: The temperature is inconsistent, often dangerously hot initially, and they cool off too quickly to be therapeutically effective 40°C. Worse, they are a breeding ground for bacteria.
-
Oil-Based Makeup Removers: These can leave a residue that clogs the meibomian glands, directly contributing to MGD and poor tear quality.
Instead, switch to the 2-Step Optometrist-Enhanced Routine: Gentle HOCl cleansing with Miracle Mist followed by controlled therapeutic heat from the Self Warming Eye Mask.
